Lately on the forums I have noticed a few people commenting that digital art looks better, or is more popular than traditional art. I think that as internet dwellers, video gamers, and moviegoers our perception can easily be skewed in that direction. After all, we are inundated with commercial art and most commercial art is digital because working digitally is more productive, flexible, and cost effective. I understand art is about taste, and if everyone is eating the same thing it must be yummy right? But if we just experience what is placed in front of us we are limiting our perception. Maybe we need to make more of an effort to expand our palates.
Staring into a digital display can lead to tunnel vision. Let's step away from the glowing screen and give ourselves a chance to appreciate the analog more often. For myself, a good jog along a route that takes me past a herd of sheep and a flock of obnoxious crows is a good start. Mixing up some batter and trying to finagle it into paper thin crepes is always fun (it's all in the wrist). And of course, stopping by the bookstore and grabbing a favorite print magazine like Juxtapoz can lead to an inspiration.
Juxtapoz is filled with a ton of cutting edge traditional art and I think it helps to keep my perception between analog and digital mediums balanced. I invite you to check it out, and leave a comment if you know of some other great resources that will help keep me on a balanced art diet.
